Medico-legal aspects of CPG’s and Off-label prescribing

Dr. Ross Berringer graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1980. From 1985 through 2006, he practiced full time emergency medicine at St. Paul's Hospital achieving the rank of clinical associate professor. He was the medical director for Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services and the advanced life support medical advisor for the BC Ambulance Service. In May of 2006 he joined the CMPA as a physician risk manager. Dr. Berringer continues to work clinically as an emergency physician at the Ottawa Hospital.

Description
Are there legal problems when medical practice differs from clinical practice guideline (CPG) recommendations?  What about off-label prescribing?

Ten Commandments for the New Therapeutics

Presented by:
Dr John YudkinJohn S Yudkin, MD, FRCP, 
Emeritus Professor of Medicine and former Director, International Health and Medical Education Centre, University College London

Dr. Yudkin was Consultant in General Medicine and Diabetes and Professor of Medicine at University College, and Director of UCL’s International Health and Medical Education Centre. In the last 10 years, his work has increasingly focused on access to health care in low income countries, evidence-based practice, and guidelines. Dr. Yudkin is lead author of "The Idolatry of the Surrogate" a provocative British Medical Journal critique of modern therapeutics published in December 2011. He is a former marathon runner and avid follower of Arsenal FC.

Description
Ten Commandments for the New Therapeutics: putting the patient's interests first.   Brief lecture followed by table discussions over dinner; Q&A and general discussion to follow.
